Yup. We're out of space on the server again.

For the past 24 hours or so, access to the web site and project servers has been very slow. It just took about 2 hours of repeated reload attempts just to get this forum page to load.

And client computers have to retry many times before they can download new work and upload completed work. And when they do get a connection, the transfer speed ranges from around .01 Kbps to .35 Kbps.

How come I still only have a silver PERF badge?

Punten totaal 585,166.26111667
Huidige punten gemiddelde 2,075.34559647
iThena CNode credit 283,694.26111667 total, 835.85291948 average (214462 tasks)
iThena PERF credit 300,684.00000000 total, 1,210.90472822 average (150343 tasks)
iThena OONI Probe credit 788.00000000 total, 29.20203926 average (394 tasks)

The badges haven't been updated for a long time. I should have been moved to Diamond in PERF around the beginning of May, but I still have a Jade badge. I decided not to worry about it...

Most other NCI projects don't use much bandwidth, so they use a fixed credit per task, or a small amount of credits for the time that the task runs (similar to "normal" projects, but a lower number of credits).

Since iThena relies primarily on Internet bandwidth, especially the Linux tasks that use huge amounts of bandwidth, that could be a possible way of determining credits. But to be proportional to the Windows PERF tasks, the Linux tasks would have to give up to several thousand credits each to be "fair" based on the amount of data used, and I'm not sure you want to do that...

My first question would be is: Do the CNODE and OONI tasks really need to use that much Internet bandwidth? If so, then higher credit rewards would be appropriate. If not, then it would be good to find out why they are using that much data and why they frequently run for as much as 48 hours or more when the CNODE tasks used to only run for about 30 minutes, using the high bandwidth the entire time, and maybe (if possible) clean up the code so they are not as demanding and intrusive.

I wanted to have a reason to run the project on Linux again, but I agree with the others who have commented. 16 credits, or even 160 credits, per task is not a good incentive to run either of the Linux projects (CNODE and OONI), using up massive amounts of Internet bandwidth for virtually zero reward. Particularly when the Windows tasks run quickly and don't use much bandwidth.

On my Linux VM, a single OONI task has been using a constant 120Kbps upload and 6 Kbps download. That's about 10 GB used per day, for a single OONI task.

The Windows tasks average about 200Bps upload and virtually zero download. That's a massive difference!

Given a choice between a single Linux task that gives 2 credits now and will give 16 credits at some point in the future (per your comment) or around 600 Windows tasks that will give 2 credits each in less total time and using less total bandwidth, there really isn't a strong incentive to run the Linux tasks unless the computer(s) are already running Linux anyway and the user doesn't have a monthly Internet bandwidth limit...

Yup. I was hoping that the switch to the new host would also include more storage space, but it looks like that is a problem that still needs to be resolved.

Well, my Linux CNODE tasks were taking about 30 minutes per task back when this was originally posted. I honestly don't pay a lot of attention to them so I don't know when it changed, but all of my CNODE tasks are taking about 24 hours to run now, just as other people mentioned in this thread.

30 minutes was bad enough, compared to the 3 minutes or so that the Windows tasks run, but 24 hours is just awful. Virtually zero credits, and they still run all day and use up Internet bandwidth all day. I'm turning my Linux instances off until this gets resolved.

Frankly, unless you specifically want a Linux "badge" from the project, or you just want to do it while learning more about Linux, I would just run iThena in Windows. The Windows tasks run a lot faster, so they get a lot more credit, and they don't use anywhere near as much Internet bandwidth.

My Linux CNODE tasks almost always run right around 30 minutes unless there is a problem. That is a lot longer than the Windows PERF tasks run, but it has pretty much always been that way. The two applications run different types of tests.

I'll be honest that I don't want to look through all of your computer list/task history to get a more detailed report, but from what I did see, it looks like you're running Linux in a virtual machine on a Windows 10 laptop with an i5-6200U processor. I see that the VM used to be allowed two CPU cores until last October, and now the new(?) VM is only allowed one core, and apparently a severely restricted one based on the extremely low BOINC benchmark score. A side result of that is you are actually having some tasks run as long as 42-48 hours before they are able to complete their assigned work. That's definitely not normal.

While iThena is technically an NCI (Non CPU Intensive) project, running larger numbers of instances of BOINC/iThena at the same time do add up and require a modest amount of CPU power. My guess is that the 40 or so instances you are running in that VM need more CPU power than what you are letting the VM have. I suspect you'd get much better results if you let the VM actually have a full CPU core (or even half of a core) instead of just a small percentage of one. That would potentially reduce the productivity of the laptop in other projects a little, if you are running any, so you'd have to decide if running Linux iThena tasks is worthwhile to you or not.

The CNODE tasks also use a LOT more network bandwidth than the PERF tasks, so if your Internet connection is limited, running multiple Linux CNODE tasks could be overwhelming your connection.

Personally, I choose not to really focus on Linux and just let any of my actual Linux machines run a single iThena instance. They tend to average about 30-50 credits per day, while my Windows systems get 150-200 or more credits each per day.

Why i get no new work? The Server shows a lot of tasks but i get no work??

The server is getting disk write failure errors. Not specifically out of space like usual, but the same effect. Can't write to the disk, can't upload or download work...

Seems to be working fine for the past 10 hours or so.

Rysiu did say that disk space errors will probably pop up once in a while, so it's not really a surprise, and it has been resolved after about a day of down time. Sure it's frustrating to have any down time at all, but even the big, well-funded projects have down time sometimes...

I haven't done a scientific study to get exact numbers, but I can say that running multiple Linux/CNODE tasks puts a lot more stress on my router than 8-10 times as many Windows/PERF tasks does.

I agree with the other commenters. Between 1 AM and 2 AM UMT on March 10, 2021, run times on PERF tasks jumped from around 133 seconds to around 2400 seconds. But still only giving the same 2 credits per task.

This was an instant change (not a gradual increase) in run times, and has been consistently high on all tasks since then, and it is happening on all of my computers that I checked.

Also, my run times for CNODE tasks on Linux machines have NOT changed. So maybe there was a mistake in the outage/fire announcement and it actually affected the PERF server and not the CNODE server?

Seriously, should I drop this project? I've been sitting on the "Communication Deferred" countdown since I joined almost a month ago. I have zero credit because I can never get any work sent over. How can I fix this?

Your account info says that you joined on January 20th, which lines up with about the time that the server was having problems with available work, and then out of disk space, so nobody was really able to get any work then. It has been OK for several days, though, so I honestly don't know why you wouldn't be able to get any work now. Have you tried resetting the project, or completely removing it from your BOINC client and then adding it back in again? That will sometimes fix weird problems where things are just stuck without an obvious explanation.

If you let it just sit and don't do a manual update, does it still not get anything? If you try to update before the delay timer runs out, it will reset the timer..

If it still says the same after the timer runs out and the BOINC client does an update on its own, try resetting the project, or remove the project completely and attach it again.

No, that's not normal. The server was out of disk space on Saturday so nobody was able to get/return work then, but I've had no problems getting Windows and Linux tasks for quite a while before that.

What does the BOINC event log say when you try to get new work from the project?

There aren't any Windows (PERF) tasks available, and haven't been any for a couple of weeks. There are Linux (CNODE) tasks available but they take a lot longer to run for the same 2 credits.

I'd like to have more PERF tasks available, too. But this IS a holiday break so I'm not particularly surprised that a project run by a single person doesn't have 24/7 support...
